Dr. Fernández is a board certified, advanced laparoscopic
general surgeon with extensive experience in bariatric surgery.
He was awarded a full term "Centers of Excellence" in Bariatric
Surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric
Surgery (ASMBS) together with the Surgical Review Corporation
(SRC). Additionally he was awarded a "5-star" maximum rank by
Healthgrades, a hospital ranking institution. He currently
belongs to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric
Surgery (ASMBS), Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), Society of
Laparoendoscopic Surgery (SLS), Alton Ocshner Surgical Society,
and the American Medical Association (AMA), to name a few.
He earned his medical doctorate from the prestigious Universidad
Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic in 1981 after graduating with a BS in Chemistry from
University of Miami in Miami, Florida in 1976. Dr. Fernández
did his specialized training at the privately owned Alton Oschner
Medical Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana finishing with top
honors in his residency program in 1986.
Dr. Fernández has been in private practice for over 21 years in the Tampa Bay area. He is the Bariaric Medical Director Brandon Regional Hospital in Brandon. He has performed over 500 laparoscopic bariatric surgeries. Additionally he is a National Proctor/Preceptor for Bariatric Surgery for Ethicon Surgical Corporation.
He has received numerous awards through out his career and has given many presentations in the field of general and bariatric surgery. His recognition in the field of advanced laparoscopy since the inception of laparoscopy in early 90's has been instrumental in his surgical career.
He is very personable, always accessible to all his patients, and very outgoing. Dr. Fernández is married and has five kids. Fishing is what makes him feel as comfortable as in the OR. Bariatric surgery is the most rewarding surgery he performs. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
