Dr. Fernández is a board certified, advanced laparoscopic general surgeon with extensive experience in bariatric surgery. He was awarded a full term "Centers of Excellence" in Bariatric Surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) together with the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). Additionally he was awarded a "5-star" maximum rank by Healthgrades, a hospital ranking institution. He currently belongs to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgery (SLS), Alton Ocshner Surgical Society, and the American Medical Association (AMA), to name a few.

Originally from Miami, she moved to Tampa 13 years ago. She acquired an Associate in Science degree from Miami-Dade Community College in May 1997. Mrs. Rivera-Fernández received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from Barry University in May 2003. She simultaneously completed a certificate in health services administration. In December 2014 she acquired a Masters in Business Administration from University of Phoenix. Before leading the team at Tampa Bariatrics she held an administrative director position for an operating room in Miami. She implemented a bariatric program there and came to Tampa with vast experience in the field of bariatrics.
